Grand Rounds are traditional hospital events held weekly throughout the country. Typically, a guest speaker is invited. The hospital staff, residents, and students fill an auditorium and listen to the speaker’s presentation.

The history of grand rounds is the history of the presentation of new medical ideas. Prior to the advent of widespread medical publishing and the internet, grand rounds held a central place in medical education. There was no other way to disseminate new information and to interact with the person presenting that information.

Two major changes have occurred over the last fifty years. Information is now readily available through the internet. Hospitals are functioning in an increasingly restrictive economic environment.

Given the expense of inviting a speaker to a medical institution, there is a need for careful scrutiny of the speaker’s ability to transmit his ideas. There is a need to be selective. There is a need, for the hospital or group “to get its money’s worth.”

The staff of GrandRoundsIdol.com is committed to fairly and accurately cataloguing critiques of speakers at Grand Rounds events. These critiques will be catalogued by medical specialty, date of presentation and topic.

Our goal is to let the audience voice their opinion of the speaker. These opinions will be catalogued and will serve as a guide for hospitals and other groups as they decide whom to invite to their Grand Rounds.
